The Biggest Lie You’ve Been Told About Life (And Why You Feel Behind)

“Why does everyone else seem ahead of me?”
It’s a quiet thought… but a heavy one. It creeps in when you’re scrolling, when you’re sitting with your own life, when things don’t look the way you imagined they would by now.
And underneath it all, there’s often this feeling:
“I’m behind”
Trust me I get it, because I used to feel like this all the time. But what if I told you that feeling…is built on one of the biggest lies we’ve ever been taught?
The Lie: Life Has a Timeline You’re Supposed to Follow
Somewhere along the way, many of us absorbed this unspoken rulebook:
Get married by 25. Buy a house by 30. Have kids before 35. Build a successful career as early as possible
It’s subtle, but it’s everywhere…woven into conversations, social media, family expectations and even the way success is portrayed…And without even realising it, we start measuring our lives against it.
We begin to believe that life is a race. That there’s a “right time” for everything and that if we haven’t hit certain milestones by a certain age…we’ve somehow fallen behind.
Why You Feel Behind in Life (Even When You’re Not)
If you’ve ever Googled “why do I feel behind in life?” or “how to stop comparing myself to others”, you’re not alone. This feeling doesn’t come from your life actually being behind. It comes from comparison.
Because when you look around, you don’t see the full picture…you see highlights:
Someone getting engaged
Someone buying a house
Someone landing their dream job
Someone starting a family
And suddenly, your life feels like it’s missing something. But here’s what we actually forget in those moments: You’re comparing your 'behind-the-scenes' to someone else’s 'highlight reel'...You’re measuring your life using a timeline that was never designed for you…No wonder it feels like you’re behind.
Life Isn’t a Race (Even If It Feels Like One)
Let’s gently unravel this idea.
There are people who:
Find love in their early 20s… and others who meet their person in their 60s
Become parents young… and others who step into parenthood later in life
Stay in one career for decades… and others who pivot multiple times
Take longer to figure things out… and build something deeply aligned
And all of these lives are valid. There is no “too late”, “too early” and there is no universal timeline. There is only your timing.
What I’ve Seen Working With So Many Different People
Through my work, I’ve had the privilege of sitting with people from all kinds of life paths:
High-achieving professionals and people starting over
Parents at different stages of life
People rebuilding after divorce
People changing careers in their 30s, 40s, even 50s
People still figuring out what they truly want
And what stands out as a reminder every single time is this:
There is no one “right way” to live a life.
The only thing that truly matters is whether the choices you’re making feel aligned for you.
Because the pressure doesn’t come from life itself. It comes from believing we’re supposed to live the same life as everyone else.
How to Stop Comparing Yourself to Others
If you’re tired of feeling behind, here’s a gentle shift you can begin with:
1. Question the Timeline You’ve Been Given
Ask yourself: Who decided this was the “right” timeline? Was it truly yours… or something you absorbed?
2. Come Back to Your Own Life
Instead of looking sideways, look inward. What do you actually want right now, in this season?
3. Redefine What Success Means to You
Success doesn’t have to look like milestones. It can look like peace, growth, healing, alignment, or simply feeling like yourself again.
4. Honour Your Season
Some seasons are for building. Some are for resting. Some are for healing.
None of them are behind…they’re all part of the path.
You Are Not Behind in Life
If you take anything from this, let it be this:
You are not late. You are not behind. You have not missed your chance.
You are simply on a path that doesn’t look like everyone else’s.
And that’s not a bad thing…that’s where your life becomes yours.
A Gentle Reminder to Take With You
There is no universal checklist. No perfect timeline. No finish line you’re racing toward. Just a life that is unfolding in its own way, at its own pace.
So if you’ve been feeling behind lately, take a breath and come back to this truth:
Your timing is not wrong.Your path is not wrong. You are not behind.
You’re just living a life that’s uniquely yours and that’s exactly how it’s meant to be. 🤍
